This Eurovision case study takes a look back at the largest event in our company’s history. In 2023, the world’s eyes were on Liverpool. With over half a million visitors descending on the city, the technical challenge was unprecedented. Baltic Broadband was proud to be a primary connectivity partner, ensuring that Liverpool remained “United by Music” through world-class infrastructure.

The Eurovision Case Study: An Enormous Brief

The scope of this Eurovision case study covered everything from public safety to global broadcasting. Our team was tasked with connecting multiple sites across the city simultaneously for a nine-day period.

The project requirements included:

  • Public Connectivity: Providing free city-wide “Eurovision WiFi” for 15,000 fans in the Pier Head fan zone, St George’s Hall, and the Baltic Triangle.

  • Hospitality Support: Connecting over 300 venues for live streaming, guest WiFi, and payment systems.

  • Event Infrastructure: Powering Eurovision’s main systems, ticketing, CCTV, drones, and security networks.

  • Broadcast Excellence: Delivering live radio broadcasts and social media streaming for teams like TikTok.

  • Innovative Mobility: Deploying “Baltic Backpacks” for roaming media crews and high-speed links for a cruise ship on the River Mersey.

The Technical Eurovision Case Study: 100Gbps Resilience

To meet the demands of this Eurovision case study, we delivered over 100Gbps of connectivity. We utilized a hybrid network of Fibre, Fixed Wireless Access, Satellite, and 5G to ensure 100% uptime.

Resilience was the top priority. Every site had multiple failover routes (e.g., Fibre backed by Radio, and Radio backed by Satellite). This allowed us to record a staggering 128.8 Terabytes of data used over the event period without a single frame being dropped.

Powering the Event with Innovation

In line with our commitment to being an environmentally responsible ISP, we powered the network using our local renewable energy. For the more remote sites, we got creative—even using a modified Tesla Model S as a high-capacity “drive-to-site” battery for one of the major event locations!

Conclusion: Douze Points for the Baltic Team

The legacy of Eurovision 2023 will be felt in Liverpool for years. We proved that an independent, local network can outperform national providers on the world stage.

Whether we are powering a global broadcast or providing Live Events & Broadcast Connectivity for local festivals, we bring the same level of passion and technical precision.
