Ofcom has applied code powers to Liverpool-based business internet service provider Baltic Broadband.
Baltic, which operates fibre networks across Liverpool, Manchester, and London, has announced that this decision will facilitate the swifter and more cost-effective deployment of new fibre infrastructure. This development is anticipated to aid in providing internet connectivity capable of 100Gbps and above to an expanded customer base.
Following the announcement by Ofcom, Baltic stated that as an operator of its own fibre infrastructure, the removal of reliance on third-party network providers enables the company to expedite the nationwide rollout of its fibre and wireless network.
Key Details Pertaining to the Proposed Code Powers:
- Purpose: These powers are intended to assist Baltic Broadband in the deployment of network infrastructure to serve businesses, office estates, and rural locations.
- Advantages: Attainment of Code powers permits Baltic Broadband, as an operator, to install and maintain infrastructure on public land without the requisite acquisition of specific street work licenses.
- Land Access: Should an agreement not be reached with private landowners, the operator is entitled to apply to the court for the imposition of an agreement to install apparatus.
- Scope: The powers are conferred under the Communications Act 2003, thereby accelerating the deployment of network services, encompassing speeds from 100 Mbps up to 100 Gbps, in this context.
