Liverpool has long established itself as one of the UK’s most sought-after film and television hubs outside of London. From historic docklands to grand Georgian streets, the city provides a versatile backdrop for global productions.

Earlier this year, the spotlight turned to Liverpool once again for the BBC crime drama This City Is Ours, produced by the prestigious Left Bank Pictures (The Crown, Quiz, Outlander).

While audiences get to experience the tension, ambition, and drama on screen via BBC iPlayer, bringing an eight-part flagship series to life demands substantial real-world infrastructure behind the scenes. That’s where Baltic Broadband stepped in.

The Production: An Authentic Liverpool Story
Written by Liverpool’s own Stephen Butchard (The Last Kingdom) and starring Sean Bean alongside James Nelson-Joyce, This City Is Ours dives deep into the complex power dynamics and personal sacrifices within a Merseyside organised crime syndicate.

Left Bank Pictures committed to capturing the genuine atmosphere of the region, embedding production units across central Liverpool locations. Shooting a large-scale drama on live city streets presents clear logistical challenges: productions require secure spaces for talent, rock-solid power supplies, and uninterrupted, high-capacity connectivity to review footage and manage call sheets in real time.

Our Role: Data Centre Infrastructure Meets Film Logistics
Leveraging our central footprint and high-capacity network, Baltic Broadband partnered directly with Left Bank Pictures to provide mission-critical on-site support from our Liverpool City Centre Data Centre:

1. A Dedicated Cast Green Room in the City Centre
Finding private, secure, and comfortable accommodation for high-profile cast members close to active filming spots can be difficult in a bustling city centre. We repurposed flexible space inside our secure data centre facility into a comfortable, quiet green room. With 24/7 access control and a controlled indoor environment, the space gave the actors a private retreat between scenes and costume setups.

2. Ultra-Fast, Low-Latency Connectivity
Modern film production is entirely data-dependent. Production offices, visual departments, and technical directors must transfer large rushes, dailies, and scripts across encrypted channels without delay. Baltic Broadband delivered enterprise-grade, symmetrical high-speed internet directly to the production units, ensuring zero buffering or dropped connections during tight filming windows.

3. Responsive On-Site Support
Our data centre engineers and local network teams were on hand to guarantee power continuity, assist with connectivity configurations, and adapt on-the-fly as filming schedules evolved throughout the shoot.

Championing the Liverpool Film & Creative Economy
Supporting This City Is Ours highlights the expanding role of local digital infrastructure within the creative arts. When high-end film and television crews come to Merseyside, having local telecoms and data facilities capable of handling enterprise demands keeps production spend and expertise anchored in the regional economy.

“Working alongside Left Bank Pictures was a fantastic experience for our team. We pride ourselves on the speed, resilience, and adaptability of our Liverpool network, but it’s always a proud moment when our city-centre facilities can directly facilitate a major British television drama.”
