This Cavern Club case study explores how Baltic Broadband kept the music alive when the world’s most famous venue had to close its doors.

As we continue to expand our 400Gbps network across Liverpool, we wanted to look back at one of our most rewarding local projects: Keeping the music alive at the iconic Cavern Club during the 2021 lockdowns.

When the doors to the world’s most famous music club had to close, the digital stage had to open. Here is how we helped a Liverpool icon survive the “quietest” period in music history.

In January 2021, Liverpool’s music scene was facing its toughest challenge yet. Lockdowns meant that the Cavern Club—the beating heart of the city’s musical heritage—was empty. To survive, the Cavern didn’t just need to wait; they needed to innovate. They pivoted to a global live-streaming model, bringing the “Cavern experience” to fans on big-screen TVs in every corner of the globe.

But there was a problem. The existing office connection wasn’t built for a world of 4K broadcasting. Dropped frames and lag were threatening the quality of the shows and a local power failure issue meant that performances in the club itself were limited.

The Challenge: From “Office Internet” to “Global Broadcast Suite”

Live streaming music isn’t like a standard Zoom call. It requires high bit-rates, ultra-low latency, and absolute stability. The Cavern’s office connection was struggling to keep up with the demand of high-definition video, resulting in a degraded experience for the fans watching at home.

Cavern Club Case Study – The Baltic Solution: BBC-Grade Optimization

Baltic Broadband stepped in with a rapid-response engineering plan to ensure the show could go on:

  1. Instant Infrastructure Re-Routing: Within hours, our engineering team re-routed the high-capacity “Cavern Pub” connection directly to the Cavern’s office. This gave the broadcasting team the full bandwidth they needed to eliminate dropped frames.

  2. Strategic Path Optimization: We didn’t just provide a line; we tuned it. We optimized the network route specifically for Facebook Live, lowering the latency and setting “Broadcast Priority.” This is the same level of technical optimization we provide for the BBC and major film production companies.

  3. Future-Proofing for 4K: We unlocked the ability for the Cavern to stream at ultra-high bit rates (well beyond 30 frames per second). This allowed fans to watch their favorite artists in 4K quality on large home televisions, providing that “almost there” feeling when the venue doors were locked.

  4. Local Commitment: Because we are a Liverpool-based business, we know what the Cavern means to the city. To support our neighbors during the pandemic, Baltic provided this emergency engineering and optimization work entirely pro-bono.

Cavern Club Case Study- The Result: A Venue Without Walls

With the new 10Gbps-ready infrastructure in place, the Cavern Club successfully broadcasted to millions of fans globally. Even while the physical basement was empty, the spirit of Liverpool’s music scene was louder than ever.

Proud to be Liverpool’s Independent Network

At Baltic Broadband, we don’t just provide business internet; we provide the backbone for Liverpool’s economy and culture. Whether it’s an emergency install in 5 days or a mission-critical broadcast for a global icon, we are the team on the ground that makes it happen.
